Paddle Under the Stars: A Magical SUP Stargazing Experience at Maes Mynan Park
Looking for a unique outdoor adventure? Imagine gliding across a tranquil lake under a star-studded sky, immersed in the beauty of Wales’ Dark Skies. That’s exactly what happened when SUP Lass Paddle Adventures brought their SUP Stargazing Experience to Maes Mynan Holiday Park in Flintshire, North Wales, in celebration of Wales’ Dark Skies Week.

How SUP Stargazing Came to Maes Mynan Park
This unforgettable experience was made possible thanks to a serendipitous introduction via the Clwydian Range Tourism Group to the charismatic and talented Caz Dawson, founder of SUP Lass Paddle Adventures. Known for offering high-quality stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) adventures, retreats, and tuition, Caz had originally planned the event at a different location in Llanferres. However, when the venue became unavailable, Maes Mynan Park stepped in, offering one of its serene lakes as the perfect setting for this SUP stargazing adventure.

An Unforgettable Night on the Water
Despite damp and overcast weather on both weekends, the magic of North Wales’ Dark Skies prevailed. Participants floated peacefully across the lake, soaking in the sounds of nature—the hoots of owls, the distant honks of returning Canadian geese, and the gentle lapping of water beneath their boards.
Caz shared her reflections on the event:
“If you’re looking for a unique outdoor adventure, the recent SUP + Stargazing experience with SUP Lass Paddle Adventures and Acorn Leisure was truly one-of-a-kind. Hosted in the breathtaking Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape, this event blended adventure, education, and nature in a way that’s hard to beat.”
Participants paddled through the peaceful waters, guided only by the soft glow of the night. One paddler summed it up perfectly: “How often do you get to paddle in the hills of Wales in the dark? It was a truly memorable outdoor experience.”
More Than Just Paddling—A Celebration of Nature & Dark Skies
A huge thanks goes to Louise Barlow of Maes Mynan Park, whose support made this event possible. Her commitment to preserving Wales’ Dark Skies event, ensured that this experience was not just fun but educational. Attendees learned about the importance of reducing light pollution—not only for stargazing but for wildlife conservation and human well-being. And, despite the cloudy skies, the group still had the chance to explore the constellations that peeked through the night.

A Perfect End to a Magical Evening
To wrap up the night, paddlers gathered around a cosy open fire, indulging in homemade cake, rich hot chocolate from a traditional Kelly Kettle, and toasting marshmallows under the stars. A truly enchanting experience that left everyone with memories to cherish.
