Chapter One
A Little Bird with a Big Story
“Most luxury lodges begin with a floor plan. At Maes Mynan Park in North Wales, ours began with a little bird.”
Every morning at Maes Mynan Park in North Wales, before the office becomes busy and before the day’s conversations begin, there is a little wren that hops among the shrubs outside our floor length windows.
Against the backdrop of Moel y Parc and the rolling hills of the Clwydian Range, it would be easy to overlook such a tiny bird. Yet, despite its size, it somehow takes centre stage. Full of character, curiosity and energy, it quietly reminds us that some of life’s greatest pleasures are often found in the smallest moments.
That little wren became the inspiration for something much bigger.
It gave a name to a new luxury holiday lodge that is currently being handcrafted by S&S Luxury Lodges with the help and support of a multitude of local businesses. This bespoke luxury lodge will be for sale at Maes Mynan Park later this summer.
We Called Our New Lodge The Wren Retreat
It wasn’t because it sounded appealing, it’s because it already belongs here, just as the wrens who have belonged here long before we did.
Chapter Two
The Landscape Came First
For many people, designing a holiday lodge begins with choosing a floor plan, a kitchen, or perhaps a favourite fabric. Our journey started somewhere entirely different. It started with the landscape.
At Maes Mynan Park, nature is never an afterthought. The woodland, lakes, changing skies, valley, the Clwydian Range and distant hills are not simply the view from a window; they are part of everyday life here.
Perhaps that is why every important design decision throughout The Wren Retreat began with one simple question. How do we encompass the natural landscape and its wildlife into our new luxury bespoke lodge for sale?
Chapter Three
Inspired by Nature
The primary question we always ask when designing a lodge from scratch is; How can we bring the outside in?
The answer is never about copying nature. It is always about allowing nature and the stunning views to remain at the heart of the holiday homes we design.
The landscape is, quite literally, the inspiration for every room – even down to the dark green kitchen and utility cupboards in the entrance hall.
We also like to find a theme when designing bespoke lodges because we like all our lodges to be unique, and this time we looked for artists who understood the calming nature of the natural world.
So we turned to William Morris designs for inspiration. More than a century ago, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement challenged the idea that homes should simply be filled with fashionable objects. Instead, William Morris believed our surroundings should enrich everyday life through craftsmanship, natural materials and thoughtful design inspired by the living world. This couldn’t have spoken to us more, as it completely enshrined how we think, too. Owning a holiday home is a lifestyle choice and one that should always offer something more than ‘home’.
We also looked at the flowing elegance of Art Nouveau and the quiet refinement of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s water colours, whose work celebrated birds, flowers, stems and the graceful rhythm found throughout nature.
All these artists created designs, artwork, and enshrined their artistic principles, that were never really about decoration. It was more about connecting with nature and the landscape. We’ve held that thought in the design of The Wren Retreat, and this philosophy has quietly inspired every decision we have made in its creation and layout with S&S Luxury Lodges.
Owning The Wren Retreat Lodge means choosing a second home designed around wellbeing, downtime and the rhythms of the countryside — not just another property investment.
Chapter Four
The Details that Matter
Rather than beginning with furniture, we began with the senses: a feeling. How should you feel, arriving after a long week? Where do muddy walking boots go after a woodland walk? Where do you sit with tea, watching the hills change colour?
These questions shaped everything!
The entrance became more than a hallway. It became the place where the outside world could gently be left behind.
A simple oak bench seat replaced upholstered cushions because wet coats deserve practicality as much as beauty.
The hidden utility and generous storage will mean everyday life quietly disappears from view, allowing the living spaces to remain calm and uncluttered.
The kitchen wasn’t designed simply for cooking. It was positioned so that even standing at the Belfast sink, you are drawn towards the lake, the Clwydian hills, the woodlands and the ever-changing skies beyond.
Open shelving either side of the range cooker will allow light to move freely through the space, while oak worktops, traditional shaker style deep green kitchen cupboards and carefully chosen materials reflect the warmth and honesty of country living.
Although open-plan, the lounge doesn’t face a television. It faces the landscape, a picture-perfect backdrop that changes every day with the weather and the seasons. No day is every the same at Maes Mynan Park, so we decided to embrace the vista as a living painting. This is because at Maes Mynan Park, we believe the finest artwork changes every day. Morning mist drifting across the lake. Purple heather colouring Moel y Parc. Autumn leaves catching the afternoon sun. The arrival of migrating birds. Nature paints its own picture, season after season. The Wren Retreat Lodge simply frames it.
The walls will be painted in Farrow & Ball School House White to brighten the space and elevate the natural light. This light will gently filter into the open plan lounge, kitchen, and dining areas via long windows and two expansive sets of bi-fold doors. The room has been designed to enhance the changing spectacle of nature, a living painting from the comfort of the sofa where colours will shift with the seasons, across the painted panelled walls. The aim of which is to create a magical pastoral ambiance of rustic charm.
Chapter Five
A Different Way of Living – The Wren Retreat as a lifestyle choice in North Wales
The interiors tell their own story — we wanted it that way. Holiday Homeownership offers a lifestyle choice that embraces something more than the ‘norm’.
Bird-inspired fabrics, carefully selected from another family business, The Millshop Online, reflect our love of British birdlife, flowers, wildlife and patterned symmetry, all echoing, in their own way, the timeless influence of William Morris without attempting to imitate it. Warm oak furniture, calming natural colours, handcrafted details and thoughtful storage all work together to create an atmosphere that feels quietly reassuring rather than extravagant.
Luxury, we discovered, is not about having more. It is about having exactly what you need, beautifully considered.
As we developed The Wren Retreat, another thought often returned to us.
William Morris lived through the Industrial Revolution and worried that, in the pursuit of progress, people might lose their connection with craftsmanship, beauty and the natural world.
Today, we are living through another period of extraordinary change.
Artificial intelligence, automation and digital technology continue to reshape our lives at remarkable speed. Yet perhaps every generation asks itself the same question. How do we restore balance? For us, the answer still begins where it always has. With nature. Technology will continue to evolve and our world will continue to change.
But the pleasure of watching mist drift across a Welsh hillside while making a cup of tea, hearing a wren sing from the low-lying bushes, or watching the seasons quietly unfold beyond your window remains wonderfully timeless. That’s what The Wren Retreat will offer those who choose holiday homeownership as a lifestyle choice.
Chapter Six
The Story Continues
The Wren Retreat has become far more than a new luxury holiday lodge for sale. It has become the physical expression of a philosophy that has quietly shaped Maes Mynan Park for many years. A belief that craftsmanship matters. That thoughtful design improves everyday living. That small details often create the greatest comfort, and above all, that the landscape should always come first.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue sharing the story behind The Wren Retreat Lodge.
We’ll explore the partnerships that brought it to life, the inspiration behind its interiors, and why designing a bespoke luxury holiday lodge is about much more than choosing kitchens, fabrics, or furniture.
Because we believe the journey towards owning a holiday lodge shouldn’t begin with a floor plan. It should begin with a much simpler question.
How do you want your holiday home to make you feel?
Perhaps, like the little wren outside our office each morning, the answer is that true contentment is rarely measured by size or possessions, but by finding a place where you simply feel you belong.
